At BKK you need Grab, Maps, sometimes a translator, before the hotel Wi-Fi exists. Internet in Thailand in 2026 is not a "magic 5G" problem. It is a tool problem. Compatible unlocked mobile: take an eSIM, installed before Heathrow. EE, Vodafone or Three roaming and public Wi-Fi come after, not as plan A.

Rule: eSIM-compatible mobile: Thailand eSIM, home data roaming off. No eSIM: plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi. Free Max, or a SKU that writes Thailand: home data roaming can hold if you re-check the country list the week you fly. BKK, café or bungalow Wi-Fi is not a plan. 5G is dense in town (TrueMove H: 90.2% availability, Opensignal August 2026). It does not replace a plan.

A reader with no eSIM in the phone is not "behind". They need a different tool. The rest of this guide assumes a compatible SKU, the usual case on our catalog.
What the eSIM changes in 2026
The eSIM is not a network. It is access to a host. The brand (Airalo, Holafly, Ubigi, Nomad, Orange Travel) is a reseller. You buy AIS, dtac or TrueMove H, not a "5G World" cloud.
Friction. Buy from the sofa. Install on home Wi-Fi. Activate on landing. No deposit, no desk hours, no return on the flight home.
Dual SIM. iPhone and most recent Galaxy handsets: home line for the number (SMS OTP, Monzo, Revolut, high-street banks, HMRC). Thailand eSIM = data line. That is the clean 2026 move. You no longer choose between Maps and your card verification code.
Readable host. On our side the host networks column names the MNO. An operator travel pass or a welcome SMS at BKK almost never does.
5G is dense in town. AIS launched 5G Advanced in May 2026. On Koh Tao you drop back to 4G. That is normal.
The move: install before Heathrow, home number on
Open the compatibility tool before you buy a QR. Galaxy / iPhone bought from EE, Vodafone or Three: some SKUs have no eSIM. It is not "every iPhone 14 and later".
Install the profile on home Wi-Fi, or at Heathrow / Gatwick / a connection lounge. Scanning a QR jet-lagged at BKK is like the last Tube home on a Sunday: it works, it is not plan A.
On arrival: cellular data = Thailand eSIM. Data roaming off on the home SIM. Data roaming on on the travel eSIM if the profile asks for it (that is the host setting, not "EE roaming"). Leave the home number on for SMS.

Three cases, no more.
- No eSIM in the phone. Operator-locked Galaxy, old iPhone. The QR will not install. Plastic SIM at the desk, or pocket Wi-Fi.
- Many devices, one radio. Four tablets, two phones with no stable hotspot: a box avoids draining the parent's battery.
- You refuse tethering. Some eSIM plans block hotspot (fair use). A box stays an access point, even if the host behind it is the same MNO.
Public Wi-Fi (BKK, DMK, cafés, bungalows) is not on this list. It helps in a pinch. It does not replace Maps on a ferry.
Roaming, pocket Wi-Fi, public Wi-Fi: the rest
Home-carrier roaming. EU roaming stops at the EU border. Thailand is not in that zone. EE, Vodafone, Three, Tesco Mobile and giffgaff bill out-of-bundle data per MB, in small increments. On French Orange the public ladder is about €13.31 per MB. The 2026 exception sits on a factsheet: the French Free Max SKU often lists Thailand in its data destinations. That is not a €2 plan. Carriers also sell travel passes (for example 35 GB / 31 days around €29.99 on French Orange). Useful to answer the home number. Less useful to pick AIS over dtac. Detail in the roaming guide.
Pocket Wi-Fi. Useful for a group or a device with no eSIM. Pointless for an unlocked iPhone and ten days in Bangkok. Queue, deposit, return. Same radio (AIS / dtac / TrueMove H) as an eSIM, more friction.
Local plastic SIM. Airport desk, passport, sometimes a Thai number. Useful with no eSIM. Less useful once the phone takes a QR: you already paid the queue. See eSIM vs local SIM.
Public Wi-Fi. A portal, an email, a session. Fine at the hotel. It does not work under a market awning, in a songthaew, or at 6 am on the road to Pai.
How much data for your trip in Thailand?
Three typical trips, same maths as the calculator, Southeast Asia factor. Maps, Grab, Reels or a laptop on tethering: the same gigabytes on an eSIM or a pocket Wi-Fi box. Turn off photo backup on cellular if you want the low end. Read the fair use.

How to choose
Start with the phone, not BKK.
Open the compatibility tool. No eSIM: plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi. Stop there for the eSIM.
If the eSIM works: open your EE, Vodafone, Three or giffgaff account. Search for Thailand in this plan's country list, this week. Free Max: if it is still written, home data roaming can hold. Light UK PAYG, standard EE or Vodafone: almost never included without a bolt-on. Take the eSIM, switch home data roaming off. Operator travel pass: only if you must take voice calls on the home number.
Buy a Thailand plan, not "Asia", unless you really chain Cambodia or Vietnam. Read the host (AIS, dtac, TrueMove H) in the comparison. Ignore "5G World".
Install on home Wi-Fi. Keep the home line for SMS. Size the GB (Maps, Grab, Reels, a laptop). Do not buy "unlimited" because you fear the EE ladder: you switch off the ladder, you do not buy it. Read the fair use.

A captive portal is not Maps on Koh Tao. Install the eSIM before Heathrow. Public Wi-Fi rescues a QR, not a week.

How do I get internet in Thailand in 2026?
Compatible unlocked phone: a Thailand eSIM installed before the flight. It is not EU roaming, and not BKK Wi-Fi. No eSIM: plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi. Home PAYG per MB: never.
Do I need an eSIM to travel to Thailand?
As soon as the phone supports it, yes, it is the simplest tool. The eSIM is not relevant on a locked EE or Vodafone Android with no profile, an old iPhone, or a pile of tablets with no radio. Test the model before you buy a QR.
Is hotel, airport or café Wi-Fi enough?
Not as plan A. It rescues a forgotten QR or a WhatsApp call at the hotel. Grab, Maps, hotel Line: you need cellular data. Captive portals drop as soon as you move. On Koh Tao, bungalow Wi-Fi is not a plan.
How many GB for 10 days in Thailand?
About 10 GB for a week in town (Maps, messages, a bit of photo). 20 GB if you add Reels and iCloud backup. Island hopping plus a laptop on video calls pushes toward 30 GB or a plan with tethering. The site calculator uses the same scenarios, South-East Asia factor.
Can I keep my UK number?
Yes. A Thailand eSIM is almost always data only. Leave the EE, Vodafone or Three SIM or eSIM for Monzo, Revolut and HMRC OTPs. Switch off data roaming only.
Where to buy the eSIM: before the flight or in Bangkok?
Before. QR on home Wi-Fi or at Heathrow. An airport desk mostly sells local PAYG and pocket Wi-Fi, with a queue. Public Wi-Fi at BKK is a backup, not a shop.
