In China you almost never buy “an eSIM network”. You buy access to a local operator: China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom. The eSIM brand (Airalo, Holafly, Ubigi, Nomad) is a reseller. If the plan sits on the wrong host for your route, WeChat drops in Yunnan, Alipay crawls in Xi’an, and the “5G” on the pack does nothing.
This guide ranks the three mainland China MNOs for a visitor, not a local subscriber. Volumes come from operator Q2 2026 results and the MIIT (end of June 2026: 1.844 billion mobile lines across brands, 1.288 billion 5G lines, 5.102 million 5G stations). Travel eSIMs declare a host, the same field as the networks table on the China comparison.

China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom: which network in China?

Simple rule: pick China Mobile if the itinerary leaves Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Pick China Unicom if you want the most readable eSIM host and urban 5G. China Telecom is the “south / west” pick, often the same 5G as Unicom (co-built). Mix malls and mountains: take a multi-host Mobile + Unicom plan.
China Broadnet (CBN) exists. For a visitor it is not a host. Ignore it.

A reader with no eSIM radio is not “behind”. Mainland China SKUs are a frequent case. The rest of this guide assumes a compatible SKU, the usual case on our catalog.
What the studies actually measure
MIIT and carrier results: volume, not 5G ads
Opensignal publishes a Hong Kong report (May 2026). That is not mainland China. We do not rank Beijing with Hong Kong scores.
Figures that matter for a traveller (end of Q2 2026, carrier filings / Marbridge digest):
- China Mobile: 1.011 billion mobile lines. 686.74 million 5G customers. The geographic safety net.
- China Telecom: 442.43 million lines. 322.50 million 5G customers.
- China Unicom: 248.51 million 5G customers (the group mostly publishes a “connectivity” aggregate, not a like-for-like mobile park).
- MIIT, end of June 2026: 1.844 billion mobile lines (three MNOs + Broadnet). 69.9% on 5G. 5.102 million 5G stations.
Do not mix market share with felt quality. China Mobile is not “the most 5G in town”. It remains the off-asphalt safety net. For an eSIM: if the host is not China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom, ask.
What home roaming does not tell you
Staying on EE, Vodafone, Three or an EU home tariff in China is often more expensive for a worse radio. EU roaming stops at Europe. A UK post-Brexit roam pass is a different product again. China is in neither. Detail in the roaming guide.
China Unicom is not “Unicom” as an eSIM brand. A welcome SMS at PVG almost never names the host. On our side the host networks column does, for the eSIM.
Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Gmail: often blocked without a VPN, including on an eSIM. WeChat, Alipay, Baidu Maps and metro QR codes work. Some SKUs route off the mainland: ask in writing whether VPN is allowed before you pay.

1. China Mobile, the safety net
China Mobile does not crush Unicom in a Shanghai mall. It wins where a visitor suffers the radio: Yunnan, Qinghai, Inner Mongolia, high-speed rail stops between Xi’an and Lanzhou, the edges of Guilin.
If your eSIM lists China Mobile or CMCC, you have the “I do not want to debug WeChat at 10 pm” profile. That is the eSIM Giga default as soon as the itinerary is not 100% urban.
On 5G, the MIIT describes a country already dense in stations. On a mountain pass you fall back to 4G LTE. That is normal, including on a pack stamped 5G.

2. China Unicom, the best typical city day
China Unicom wins the everyday: Beijing metro, WeChat in a Didi, translate at a market, WhatsApp behind a VPN. Historically it is also the most readable host for a foreign phone (FDD-LTE bands, fewer surprises than old CDMA Telecom).
Good match Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou. Less reassuring once you leave the tarmac, unless the SKU is multi-host with Mobile. A Unicom or Telecom SKU often rides the same co-built 5G.

3. China Telecom, south and west, not the solo net
China Telecom is the network if your map leans south / west: Chengdu, Chongqing, Yunnan, sometimes Tibet / Xinjiang. 322.50 million 5G customers (Q2 2026). That is not theoretical 5G on a marketing map.
Off those corridors the bonus melts. Take Telecom as a sole host only if you own the itinerary, or if the SKU adds Mobile.

From the local operator to the eSIM: what you actually buy
So far we have talked China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom. Those are Chinese subscriber networks. A travel eSIM is not a China Mobile contract. It is an MVNO / aggregator that leases capacity on one (or more) of those hosts.

Where to read the host on our side
Product pages often say “China 5G”. The useful field is the host operator. On eSIM Giga we normalise it (China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom) from supplier labels. That is the Host networks column of the China networks table: a supplier, the average price per GB, and the hosts declared on the plans we analysed.
Three patterns come back in that table:
- A single host (often Unicom). The most readable: you know which radio you will sit on.
- Multi-host (Unicom + Mobile, sometimes Telecom). The phone attaches to the best signal. The most reassuring format off the city.
- “Partners in China” with no name. Unknown spread: possible, but you are no longer buying a network, you are buying a hope.
Airport pocket Wi-Fi (PVG / PEK / PKX / CAN) also rides these three MNOs. It loses on two points: a queue and another device. An eSIM installed before the flight remains the cleanest move.
Hong Kong and Macau are not mainland China. A mainland pack does not include them automatically.

How to choose in 60 seconds
- Trace the map. Only Beijing + Shanghai + Shenzhen + Guangzhou: Unicom or Telecom often suffice. As soon as you add Xi’an, Guilin, Yunnan, Qinghai: China Mobile (ideally multi-host).
- Open the live comparison: eSIM China, sort €/GB for capped plans, total price for short stays.
- Read the host in the networks table, not the word 5G. A Unicom 5G in Lijiang at night is not a Mobile 4G that actually connects.
- Install before the flight. Test the VPN on home Wi-Fi at Heathrow / Dublin or at home. PVG Wi-Fi exists. Scanning a QR in a jet-lag queue is worse.
- Keep the home line for bank SMS (data-only eSIM).
- Turn off iCloud / Google Photos backups on cellular unless you bought a large pack or unlimited (fair use).

What is the best mobile network in China for a traveller?
China Mobile for coverage off the megacities. China Unicom for foreign-phone compatibility and as the host most often declared on travel eSIMs. China Telecom for the south and west, often the same 5G as Unicom. An eSIM inherits that host only if the plan writes it.
How many GB do I need for China?
Maps, WeChat and messaging for a city week: a 10 GB pack often holds. Video, VPN and photo backup over 10 days: closer to 20 GB. Laptop hotspot for two weeks: 30 to 50 GB. The calculator applies the China factor.
Travel eSIM or a Chinese-operator SIM?
