eSIM vs local SIM: what to get for your trip to China

At PVG or Capital, one queue waits for a plastic SIM from China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom. The other already has data: a travel eSIM installed before the flight. eSIM vs local SIM is not a draw. Compatible unlocked mobile: take the eSIM. Local prepaid only becomes relevant when the eSIM does not hold, or when you truly need a Chinese number.

Rule: eSIM-ready phone, 1 to 3 lines, 5 to 21 days: eSIM. Stay of several months, a Chinese number is mandatory, Galaxy with no eSIM, mainland China iPhone: plastic SIM. Staying on EE, Vodafone, Three or an EU home tariff in China is the worst of the three, unless this week’s factsheet writes China (a French Free Max SKU is the textbook example) or you bought a voice roam pass. A reader who needs a local number is not “behind”. They have another tool. The rest of this guide assumes a short stay, the usual case on our catalog.

What the local SIM actually wins

China Mobile / Unicom / Telecom prepaid is not a 2010 gadget. It wins three cases, no more.

1. A Chinese number. Restaurants, sometimes a WeChat / Alipay OTP, some bookings. The travel eSIM is almost always data only. Didi and WeChat also work on data.
2. A long stay. Three months in Shanghai: yuan per GB on a local postpaid can win. Five days in Pudong, no, once you count the queue.
3. No eSIM. Carrier-locked Galaxy, mainland China iPhone, old iPhone. The QR will not take. The eSIM compatibility tool says so before you pay, not at PEK.

The rest (“that is what the cousin in Beijing does”) is not an argument. Your cousin is a subscriber. You are a visitor.

What the eSIM wins (almost always)

Friction. Buy from the sofa. Install on home Wi-Fi. Activate on landing. No queue, no desk hours, no real-name registration.

Dual SIM. iPhone and most recent Galaxies: home line for the number (bank OTP, HMRC, Monzo). China eSIM = data line. You no longer choose between WeChat and the card code.

A readable host. On our side the host networks column names China Mobile, Unicom or Telecom. A desk often sells “20 GB” without saying whether you will be on Unicom or Mobile once you leave the airport. Same radio possible, less information before you pay.

Unicom is not Telecom. A China Telecom SIM at the desk, an eSIM SKU “Unicom”, an Orange Travel eSIM: three products. Do not merge them because they co-build 5G.

The network ranking applies to both tools. An Unicom SIM in Lijiang is no more magic than an Unicom eSIM. Pick the host, not the plastic.

Mistakes that still cost money

1. Pulling the home SIM for “a proper local”

   You lose HMRC, Monzo, OTPs. Dual SIM: China eSIM + home line. No eSIM: pocket Wi-Fi or a local SIM in the second tray, not instead of the home number.

   Many have no eSIM. The test is before you buy. Fail: plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi, not a QR in the PVG queue.

Compatible unlocked phone, and not a mainland-China iPhone: travel eSIM, installed before the flight. Plastic local SIM wins on a stay of several months or if you need a Chinese number. Ten days in Shanghai, the eSIM wins over the queue.

Do I need a passport for a China Mobile, Unicom or Telecom SIM?

Yes, real-name registration (passport) is the prepaid counter rule. A travel eSIM is bought without a PVG queue. Not the same product: data only on one side, often a local number on the other.

Is a local SIM cheaper than an eSIM?

Local prepaid can win in yuan if you stay a long time. For 5 to 21 days, add the taxi, the queue and the time. China catalog €/GB often comes out ahead, with no desk.

Can I keep my home number with a local SIM?

Only if the phone is dual SIM. Pulling the home SIM for “a local one” drops HMRC, Monzo and bank OTPs. A travel eSIM leaves the home line on. That is the clean move.

Does an iPhone bought in China take a travel eSIM?

Often no. Many mainland SKUs keep a dual physical tray with no eSIM. Hong Kong and Macao vary. Open Settings: if there is no Add eSIM, the QR will not go through.

Where to buy a local SIM in Shanghai or Beijing?

Airport desks (PVG, SHA, PEK, PKX, CAN) and city shops. Hours, passport, sometimes 4G-only stock. The eSIM installs on home Wi-Fi. The desk stays useful if the phone has no eSIM.
