eSIM vs local SIM: what to get for your trip to Canada?

AI-generated image

At YUL or YYZ one queue waits for a plastic SIM from Rogers, Bell or Telus. The other already has data: a travel eSIM installed before Heathrow. eSIM vs local SIM is not a draw. Compatible unlocked mobile: take the eSIM. Local prepaid only comes back when the eSIM does not hold, or when you genuinely need a Canadian number.

This guide compares travel eSIM and local operator SIM / eSIM for everyone: solo, couple, family, group, business, older travellers, teenagers, mobile with no eSIM. Hosts stay the same. Detail in the network guide. Plans sit on the Canada comparison.

Supplier links are affiliates. They do not move the eSIM verdict or the catalog prices. Detail in the methodology.

Rule: eSIM-ready phone, 1 to 3 lines, 5 to 21 days: eSIM. Stay of several months, Canadian number mandatory, Galaxy with no eSIM: plastic SIM. EE, Vodafone, Three or giffgaff roaming in Canada remains the worst of the three, except a rare SKU that lists the country (French Free Max is the example, not EE) or a travel pass for voice. EU roaming does not cover Canada. A UK post-Brexit roam pass is a different product again. Detail in the roaming guide.

Three eSIMs we track, useful once the phone passes the check:

A reader who needs a local number is not "behind". They need a different tool. The rest of this guide assumes a short stay, the usual case on our catalog.

What the local SIM actually wins

Rogers / Bell / Telus prepaid is not a 2010 gadget. It wins three cases, no more.

  1. A Canadian number. Restaurants, sometimes a local app OTP, certain bookings. The travel eSIM is almost always data only. Uber and WhatsApp also work on data.
  2. A long stay. Three months in Montreal: the Canadian dollar per GB on a local plan can win. Five days in Toronto, no, once you count the queue. Postpaid often needs a Canadian banking history. That is not a tourist.
  3. No eSIM. Operator-locked Galaxy (EE, Vodafone, Three, Tesco Mobile), old iPhone. The QR will not install. The eSIM compatibility tool says so before purchase, not at YVR.

The rest ("that is what my cousin in Outremont does") is not an argument. Your cousin is a subscriber. You are a visitor.

What the eSIM wins (almost always)

Friction. Buy from the sofa. Install on home Wi-Fi. Activate on landing. No queue, no kiosk hours.

Dual SIM. iPhone and most recent Galaxy handsets: home line for the number (SMS OTP, Monzo, Revolut, PayPal, UK high-street banks). Canada eSIM = data line. You no longer choose between Maps and your card code.

Readable host. On our side the host networks column says Telus, Bell or Rogers. A counter often sells "20 GB" without saying whether you will be Telus or Rogers once you leave the airport.

Fido, Chatr, Koodo, Virgin Plus, Lucky, Fizz. These are MVNOs / flanker brands. Fido and Chatr sit on Rogers. Koodo sits on Telus. Virgin Plus and Lucky sit on Bell. Fizz sits on Videotron. Same radio, different brand. A travel eSIM "Telus" and a Koodo SIM are two products. Do not merge them because the antenna is the same.

The network ranking applies to both tools. A Telus SIM at Banff is not more magic than a Telus eSIM. Pick the host, not the plastic. Telus Best Network sits at 91.8 Mbps download and 31.8% time on 5G (Opensignal August 2026). Bell leads 5G download at 173.6 Mbps and shares coverage at 9.57 / 10. Rogers leads upload at 14.1 Mbps, with download at 76.1 Mbps. CRTC sets the licence frame, not your tourist SKU.

DATA / CANADA

How much data for your trip in Canada?

Three typical trips, same maths as the calculator, North America factor. Maps, Uber, Reels or a laptop on tethering: the same gigabytes on an eSIM or a pocket Wi-Fi box. Turn off photo backup on cellular if you want the low end. Read the fair use.

A week, phone only10 GB

Estimate 8.3 GB · Maps, chat, Instagram. No Reels, no laptop.

Ten days with Reels20 GB

Estimate 16.5 GB · Same base, plus half an hour of video a day.

Two weeks with a laptop50 GB

Estimate 31.6 GB · One hour of phone tethering a day for the computer.

Mistakes that still cost money

  1. Pulling the UK SIM for « a proper local »

You lose Monzo, Revolut, high-street OTPs. Dual SIM: Canada eSIM + home line. No eSIM: pocket Wi-Fi or a local SIM in the second tray, not in place of the home number.

    Check compatibility
  2. Thinking a YYZ kiosk sells the same product as a Rogers postpay line

Tourist prepaid is not a postpay contract. Read the live host. ID at the counter is not an eSIM. CRTC prepaid is still Fido / Koodo / the Big Three, not a fourth radio.

    Compare Canada eSIMs
  3. Queuing at YUL for 8 days in Montreal

ID, sometimes 4G stock. An eSIM installed at home skips that. The local SIM wins on a long stay, not a weekend.

    Compare Canada eSIMs
  4. Scanning the QR on a phone with no eSIM, at the airport

The test is before you buy. Fail: plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi, not a QR in the queue.

    Check compatibility
  5. Buying local « unlimited » without reading fair use

Canadian prepaid throttles too, especially hotspot. Size the GB. Unlimited without tethering does not save a laptop.

FAQ

FAQ

eSIM or local SIM in Canada?

Compatible unlocked phone: travel eSIM, installed before the flight. The plastic local SIM wins on a stay of several months or if you need a Canadian number. Ten days in Montreal, the eSIM wins over the YUL queue.

Do I need a passport for a Rogers, Bell or Telus SIM?

Yes, often. Canadian prepaid usually asks for ID at the counter. A travel eSIM is bought without a YYZ queue. Not the same product: data only on one side, sometimes a local number on the other. CRTC rules apply to the kiosk too.

Is a local SIM cheaper than an eSIM?

Local prepaid can win in Canadian dollars if you stay a long time. For 5 to 21 days, add the taxi, the queue and the time. Canada catalog €/GB often comes out ahead, with no desk.

Can I keep my UK number with a local SIM?

Only if the phone is dual SIM. Pulling the EE, Vodafone or Three SIM for « a proper local » drops Monzo, Revolut and high-street OTPs. A travel eSIM leaves the home line on. That is the clean move.

Are Fido, Koodo or Virgin Plus Rogers, Telus or Bell?

They are flanker brands / MVNOs. Fido and Chatr ride Rogers. Koodo rides Telus. Virgin Plus and Lucky ride Bell. Fizz rides Videotron in Quebec. Read the written host, not the kiosk logo. CRTC treats them as part of those groups.

Where to buy a local SIM in Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver?

Rogers / Bell / Telus shops in town, sometimes a kiosk at YUL, YYZ, YVR. Hours, ID, sometimes 4G-only stock. The eSIM installs on home Wi-Fi. The desk stays useful if the phone has no eSIM.

A travel eSIM and a local SIM often ride the same MNOs. What changes is the queue, the number, and the bank SMS. Once the phone is compatible and the stay is short, we stay on the eSIM.
