Internet in Canada in 2026: eSIM, roaming or Wi-Fi?

AI-generated image

At YUL you need Uber, Maps, sometimes a translator, before you have hotel Wi-Fi. Internet in Canada in 2026 is not a "magic 5G" problem. It is a tools problem. Compatible unlocked mobile: take an eSIM, installed before Heathrow. EE, Vodafone, Three and public Wi-Fi come later, not as plan A.

This guide ranks the ways to have internet on the trip: eSIM, home-carrier roaming, pocket Wi-Fi, plastic SIM, airport Wi-Fi. Hosts behind it stay Telus, Bell and Rogers. Detail in the network guide. The box has its own piece: eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi. Home roaming too: roaming or eSIM. Plans sit on the Canada comparison.

Supplier links are affiliates. They do not move the eSIM verdict or the catalog prices. Detail in the methodology.

Internet in Canada: the 2026 verdict

OptionWho it is forStrengthTraveller weakness
Travel eSIM1 to 3 compatible mobiles, 5 to 21 daysBuy before the flight, host written, €/GBData only: no Canadian number
Pocket Wi-FiLarge group, tablets, handset with no eSIMOne Wi-Fi for N devicesQueue, deposit, extra kit
Home SKU that still lists CanadaOnly if this week's page names the countryData on the line you already haveYou do not pick the host. A French Free Max SKU is the example, not EE
Operator travel passVoice calls on the home numberAn add-on in the carrier appOpaque host, price per GB often behind the eSIM
PAYG per MBNobodyNoneOrange FR: €13.31 per MB. Maps is not a "quick test"
Public Wi-FiNobody as plan ABackup for a forgotten QRCaptive portal, zero bars in the Rockies

Rule: eSIM-ready phone: Canada eSIM, data roaming off on the home line. No eSIM: plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi. A rare SKU that writes Canada (French Free Max is the textbook example): data roaming can hold if you re-check the country list the week you fly. YUL, Tim Hortons or hotel Wi-Fi is not a plan. 5G exists in town (Telus: 31.8% time on 5G, Opensignal August 2026). It does not replace a plan. EU roaming and a UK post-Brexit roam pass do not cover Canada.

Three eSIMs we track, useful once the phone passes the check:

Who it is for: solo, family, group, business

ProfilePickWhy
Solo, compatible iPhone / Pixel / GalaxyeSIMMaps in the pocket as you leave the runway
Couple, two unlocked mobiles2 eSIMs (or 1 + tethering)Two bars. One travel pass does not save the second phone
Family, kids / tabletsAdult eSIMs + hotspotMonzo, Revolut, PayPal and UK high-street OTPs stay on the home line
Group of 5+eSIM or pocket Wi-FiOne group Wi-Fi, not five UK roam bills
Business, laptopeSIM + tetheringAn hour of video in Toronto on EE PAYG has no human cap
Older traveller, uneasy with a QReSIM installed at homeThe YVR desk is not simpler once the deposit is paid
Teens on a cheap SIMeSIM, home data off before boardingA light UK PAYG or Irish SIM carries almost nothing outside Europe
Premium world tariff, Canada listedHome data roaming possibleRecheck the list. Keep SMS on that line
Mobile with no eSIMPlastic SIM or pocket Wi-FiThe eSIM is not relevant. Check the model first

A reader with no eSIM in the phone is not "behind". They need a different tool. The rest of this guide assumes a compatible SKU, the usual case on our catalog.

What the eSIM changes in 2026

The eSIM is not a network. It is access to a host. The brand (Airalo, Holafly, Ubigi, Nomad, Orange Travel) is a reseller. You buy Telus, Bell or Rogers, not a "5G World" cloud.

Friction. Buy from the sofa. Install on home Wi-Fi. Activate on landing. No deposit, no desk hours, no return on the flight home.

Dual SIM. iPhone and most recent Galaxy handsets: home line for the number (SMS OTP, Monzo, Revolut, PayPal, UK high-street banks). Canada eSIM = data line. That is the clean 2026 move. You no longer choose between Maps and your card code.

Readable host. On our side the host networks column names the MNO. An EE travel pass or a welcome SMS at YUL almost never does. Fido and Chatr sit on Rogers. Koodo sits on Telus. Virgin Plus and Lucky sit on Bell. Fizz sits on Videotron.

5G is present in town, less dense than New York. On a Rockies road you will fall back to 4G. That is normal. Telus Best Network download is 91.8 Mbps. Bell 5G Download is 173.6 Mbps, coverage 9.57 / 10. Rogers upload is 14.1 Mbps, all-generation download 76.1 Mbps (Opensignal August 2026, CRTC licence frame).

The move: install before Heathrow, home number on

Open the compatibility tool before you buy a QR. Some Androids bought on EE, Vodafone, Three or Tesco have no eSIM. It is not "every iPhone 14 and later".

Install the profile on home Wi-Fi, or at Heathrow / Gatwick / Manchester / a connection airport. Scanning a QR jet-lagged at YUL is like the Piccadilly line on a Sunday evening: it works, it is not plan A.

On arrival: cellular data = Canada eSIM. Data roaming off on the home SIM. Data roaming on on the travel eSIM if the profile asks for it (that is the host setting, not "EE roaming"). Leave the home number on for SMS.

YUL / YYZ / YVR pocket Wi-Fi remains a device, a queue, often a deposit. We only pull it out if the eSIM does not hold. See the eSIM vs pocket Wi-Fi guide.

When the eSIM does not hold

Three cases, no more.

  1. No eSIM in the phone. Operator-locked Galaxy, old iPhone. The QR will not install. Plastic SIM in a shop, or pocket Wi-Fi.
  2. Many devices, one radio. Four tablets, two phones with no stable hotspot: a box avoids draining the parent's battery.
  3. You refuse tethering. Some eSIM plans cut hotspot (fair-use). A box remains an access point, even if the host behind it is the same MNO.

Public Wi-Fi (YUL, YYZ, cafés, motels) is not on this list. It is a backup. It does not replace Maps on the Trans-Canada.

Roaming, pocket Wi-Fi, public Wi-Fi: the rest

Home-carrier roaming. EU roaming stops at the EU border. Canada is not in that zone. A UK post-Brexit roam pass is a different product again. EE, Vodafone, Three, Tesco Mobile and giffgaff bill out-of-bundle data per MB outside Europe, in small increments. On French Orange the public ladder is about €13.31 per MB. UK PAYG is the same idea in pounds. Exception in 2026 sits on a factsheet: a French Free Max SKU often still lists Canada in its data destinations. That is not EE. That is not a £10 PAYG SIM. EE and Vodafone also sell travel passes. Useful to keep voice on the home number. Less useful to pick Telus over Rogers. Detail in the roaming guide.

Pocket Wi-Fi. Useful for a group or a device with no eSIM. Pointless for an unlocked iPhone and ten days in Montreal. Queue, deposit, return. Same radio (Telus / Bell / Rogers) as an eSIM, more friction.

Local plastic SIM. Shop, ID, sometimes a Canadian number. Useful with no eSIM. Less useful once the phone takes a QR: you already paid the queue. See eSIM vs local SIM.

Public Wi-Fi. A portal, an email, a session. It works at the hotel. It does not work in a canyon, in an Uber, or at 6 a.m. on the road to Banff.

DATA / CANADA

How much data for your trip in Canada?

Three typical trips, same maths as the calculator, North America factor. Maps, Uber, Reels or a laptop on tethering: the same gigabytes on an eSIM or a pocket Wi-Fi box. Turn off photo backup on cellular if you want the low end. Read the fair use.

A week, phone only10 GB

Estimate 8.3 GB · Maps, chat, Instagram. No Reels, no laptop.

Ten days with Reels20 GB

Estimate 16.5 GB · Same base, plus half an hour of video a day.

Two weeks with a laptop50 GB

Estimate 31.6 GB · One hour of phone tethering a day for the computer.

Open the data calculator

How to choose

Start with the phone, not YUL.

Open the compatibility tool. No eSIM: plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi. Stop there for the eSIM.

If the eSIM passes: open your EE, Vodafone, Three or giffgaff account. Search for Canada in the country list for this plan, this week. French Free Max: if it is still written, data roaming can hold. A light UK PAYG or Irish SIM: almost never included without a pass. Take the eSIM, turn home data roaming off. Travel pass: only if you must keep voice on the home number.

Buy a Canada plan, not "North America", unless you really chain the United States. Read the host (Telus, Bell, Rogers) in the comparison. Ignore "5G World".

Install on home Wi-Fi. Keep the home line for SMS. Size the GB (Maps, Uber, Reels, a laptop) with the data simulator. Do not buy "unlimited" because you fear the EE PAYG ladder: you turn off the ladder, you do not buy it. Read the fair-use.

Mistakes that still cost money

  1. Counting on YUL / hotel Wi-Fi

A captive portal is not Maps in Banff. Install the eSIM before Heathrow. Public Wi-Fi patches a QR, not a week.

    Compare Canada eSIMs
  2. Leaving home data roaming on « just in case »

Around 13.31 €/MB on Orange FR, and UK PAYG is no kinder. Switch off data roaming, not the line: bank SMS still have to land.

    Compare Canada eSIMs
  3. Buying a « North America » eSIM for Montreal only

You pay for the US / Mexico you will not use. Stay on a Canada plan, and read the host. A regional pack only wins if you actually chain borders.

    Canada-only plans
  4. Scanning the QR on a phone with no eSIM, at YYZ

The test is before you buy. Fail: plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi, not a QR in the queue.

    Check compatibility
  5. Taking pocket Wi-Fi « because it is simpler »

Queue, deposit, return. An eSIM installed at home is the simplest move once the phone is compatible.

FAQ

FAQ

How do we stay online in Canada in 2026?

Compatible phone: a Canada eSIM installed before the flight. It is not EU roaming, and not YUL Wi-Fi. No eSIM: plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi. The carrier’s per-MB ladder, never.

Do I need an eSIM to travel in Canada?

As soon as the phone takes one, yes, it is the simplest tool. The eSIM is no longer relevant on a locked carrier Galaxy, an old iPhone, or a pile of tablets with no radio. Test the model before you buy a QR.

Is hotel, airport or cafe Wi-Fi enough?

Not as plan A. It patches a forgotten QR or a WhatsApp call at the hotel. Uber, Maps, STM / TTC: you need cellular data. Captive portals die as soon as you move. In Banff, visitor-centre Wi-Fi is not a plan.

How many GB for 10 days in Canada?

About 10 GB for a city week (Maps, messages, a bit of photo). 20 GB if you add Reels and iCloud. Rockies plus a laptop on video: toward 30 GB or a plan with tethering. The site calculator uses the same scenarios, North America factor.

Can I keep my UK number?

Yes. A Canada eSIM is almost always data only. Leave the EE, Vodafone or Three SIM or eSIM for Monzo, Revolut and high-street OTPs. Switch off data roaming only.

Where to buy the eSIM: before the flight or in Montreal?

Before. QR on home Wi-Fi or at Heathrow. An airport kiosk sells prepaid and pocket Wi-Fi, with a queue. YUL Wi-Fi is a backup, not a shop.

A travel eSIM, a pocket Wi-Fi and a home line in roaming often ride the same MNOs. What changes is the price per MB, the host you can read, and the bank SMS. Once the phone is compatible, we stay on the eSIM.
