At JFK or LAX one queue waits for a plastic SIM from T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon. The other already has data: a travel eSIM installed before Heathrow. eSIM vs local SIM is not a draw. Compatible unlocked mobile: take the eSIM. Local prepaid only comes back when the eSIM does not hold, or when you genuinely need a US number.

Rule: eSIM-ready phone, 1 to 3 lines, 5 to 21 days: eSIM. Stay of several months, US number mandatory, Galaxy with no eSIM: plastic SIM. EE, Vodafone, Three or giffgaff roaming in the United States remains the worst of the three, except a rare SKU that lists the country (French Free Max is the example, not EE) or a travel pass for voice. A reader who needs a local number is not "behind". They need a different tool. The rest of this guide assumes a short stay, the usual case on our catalog.
What the local SIM actually wins
T-Mobile / AT&T / Verizon prepaid is not a 2010 gadget. It wins three cases, no more.
- A US number. Restaurants, sometimes a local app OTP, certain bookings. The travel eSIM is almost always data only. Uber and WhatsApp also work on data.
- A long stay. Three months in Austin: the local postpaid dollar per GB can win. Five days in New York, no, once you count the queue. Postpaid often needs an SSN. That is not a tourist.
- No eSIM. Operator-locked Galaxy, old iPhone. The QR will not install. The eSIM compatibility tool says so before purchase, not at LAX.
The rest ("that is what my cousin in Brooklyn does") is not an argument. Your cousin is a subscriber. You are a visitor.
What the eSIM wins (almost always)
Friction. Buy from the sofa. Install on home Wi-Fi. Activate on landing. No queue, no kiosk hours, no SSN.
Dual SIM. iPhone and most recent Galaxy handsets: home line for the number (SMS OTP, Monzo, Revolut, PayPal, high-street, HMRC). United States eSIM = data line. You no longer choose between Maps and your card code.
Readable host. On our side the host networks column says T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon. A counter often sells "20 GB" without saying whether you will be T-Mobile or Verizon once you leave the airport.
Visible, Mint, Cricket. These are MVNOs. Same radio, different brand. A travel eSIM "T-Mobile" and a Mint SIM are two products. Do not merge them because the antenna is the same.
The network ranking applies to both tools. A T-Mobile SIM at Zion is not more magic than a T-Mobile eSIM. Pick the host, not the plastic.

Mistakes that still cost money
- Pulling the home SIM for « a proper local »
You lose Monzo, Revolut, high-street OTPs. Dual SIM: USA eSIM + home line. No eSIM: pocket Wi-Fi or a local SIM in the second tray, not instead of the home number.
Check compatibility - Thinking a JFK kiosk sells the same product as a Verizon postpaid
Tourist prepaid is not postpaid. Read the live host. An SSN at the counter is not an eSIM.

Passport, sometimes 4G stock. An eSIM installed at home skips that. The local SIM wins on a long stay, not a weekend.

eSIM or local SIM in the United States?
Compatible unlocked phone: travel eSIM, installed before you fly. A plastic local SIM wins for a stay of several months or if you need a US number. Ten days in New York, the eSIM wins on the queue.
Do I need a passport or SSN for a T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon SIM?
Passport at the prepaid counter, often. Verizon or AT&T postpaid frequently wants an SSN or a US address. A travel eSIM is bought with no JFK queue. Not the same product: data only on one side, sometimes a local number on the other.
Is a local SIM cheaper than an eSIM?
Local PAYG can win in dollars if you stay a long time. For 5 to 21 days, add the taxi, the queue and the time. The €/GB on the USA catalog often comes out ahead, with no desk.
Can I keep my UK number with a local SIM?
Only if the phone is dual SIM. Pulling the EE, Vodafone or Three SIM for « a proper local » drops Monzo, Revolut and high-street OTPs. A travel eSIM leaves the home line on. That is the clean move.
Are Visible, Mint and Cricket the same as Verizon or T-Mobile?
They are MVNOs. Visible rides Verizon. Mint and many travel eSIMs ride T-Mobile. Cricket rides AT&T. Read the host on the plan, not the kiosk logo.
Where can I buy a local SIM in New York or Los Angeles?
T-Mobile / AT&T / Verizon shops in town, sometimes an airport kiosk (JFK, EWR, LAX, SFO). Hours, passport, sometimes 4G stock only. The eSIM installs on home Wi-Fi. The desk still helps if the phone has no eSIM.
