Internet in Switzerland in 2026: eSIM, roaming or Wi-Fi?

At ZRH you need Maps, sometimes Twint, before you have hotel Wi-Fi. Internet in Switzerland in 2026 is not a “magic 5G” problem. It is a tools problem. Compatible unlocked mobile: take an eSIM, installed before Heathrow, Gatwick or Manchester. Home roaming and public Wi-Fi come later, not as plan A, even if your factsheet sometimes writes Switzerland.

This guide ranks the ways to have internet on the trip: eSIM, home-carrier roaming, pocket Wi-Fi, plastic SIM, airport Wi-Fi. Hosts behind it stay Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt. Detail in the network guide. The box has its own piece: eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi. Home roaming too: roaming or eSIM. Plans sit on the Switzerland comparison.

Supplier links are affiliates. They do not move the eSIM verdict or the catalog prices. Detail in the methodology.

Internet in Switzerland: the 2026 verdict

Rule: eSIM-ready phone: Switzerland eSIM, data roaming off on the home line as soon as you do not want to eat a Europe allowance. No eSIM: plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi. Factsheet that writes Switzerland: data roaming can hold if you re-check the list the week you fly. ZRH café or SBB Wi-Fi is not a plan. 5G is dense in town (CHIP 2026: three excellent grades). It does not replace a plan in Verbier. EU roaming legally does not include Switzerland.

Three eSIMs we track, useful once the phone passes the check:

Who it is for: solo, family, group, business

Older traveller, uneasy with a QReSIM installed at homeThe GVA desk is not simpler once the deposit is down
Teens on a cheap PAYG SIMeSIM, home data off before boardingA light UK or Irish SIM carries almost nothing outside the EU

A reader with no eSIM radio is not “behind”. They need a different tool. The rest of this guide assumes a compatible SKU, the usual case on our catalog.

What the eSIM changes in 2026

An eSIM is not a network. It is access to a host. The brand (Airalo, Holafly, Ubigi, Nomad, Orange Travel) is a reseller. You buy Swisscom, Sunrise or Salt, not a “5G World” cloud. Orange Travel is a travel eSIM reseller, not EE roaming.

Friction. Buy from the sofa. Install on home Wi-Fi. Enable on landing. No deposit, no desk hours, no return on departure day.

Dual SIM. iPhone and most recent Galaxies: home line for the number (UK high-street banks, Revolut, Monzo, PayPal, HMRC). Switzerland eSIM = data line. That is the clean 2026 move. You no longer choose between Maps and the card OTP.

A readable host. On our side the host networks column names the MNO. A welcome SMS at ZRH almost never does.

5G is dense in town. CHIP 2026 rates all three MNOs excellent. On an SBB train in the Gotthard you drop back to 4G, sometimes with no bars. That is normal. Tube coverage versus a rural SBB tunnel.

The move: install before Heathrow, keep the home number

Open the compatibility tool before you buy a QR. Galaxy / iPhone bought on EE, Vodafone, Three, Tesco Mobile or giffgaff: some SKUs have no eSIM. It is not “every iPhone 14 and later”.

Install the profile on home Wi-Fi, or at Heathrow / Gatwick / Manchester / a layover. Scanning a QR jet-lagged at ZRH is the Tube on a Sunday night: it works, it is not plan A.

On arrival: cellular data = Switzerland eSIM. Data roaming off on the home SIM. Data roaming on on the travel eSIM if the profile asks for it (that is the host setting, not “EE roaming”). Leave the home number on for SMS.

ZRH / GVA / BSL pocket Wi-Fi is still a device, a queue, often a deposit. We pull it only if the eSIM does not hold. See eSIM vs pocket Wi-Fi.

When the eSIM does not hold

Three cases, not more.

  1. No eSIM in the phone. Carrier Galaxy, old iPhone. The QR will fail. Plastic SIM at the desk, or pocket Wi-Fi.
  2. Many devices, one radio. Four tablets, two phones with shaky hotspot: a box avoids flattening the parent’s battery.
  3. You refuse tethering. Some eSIM plans cut hotspot (fair use). A box stays an access point, even if the host behind it is the same MNO.

Public Wi-Fi (ZRH, GVA, cafés, SBB) is not on that list. It is a backup. It does not replace Maps in a tunnel.

Roaming, pocket Wi-Fi, public Wi-Fi: the rest

Home roaming. EU “roam like at home” stops at the EU border. Switzerland is not in that legal zone. EE, Vodafone, Three, Tesco, giffgaff, Vodafone IE, Three IE, eir and other EU carriers can add it to a commercial “Europe” list. Recheck your factsheet. Without Switzerland written, it is PAYG per MB. On French Orange the public ladder is about €13.31 per MB. UK PAYG is the same idea in pounds. Detail in the roaming guide.

Pocket Wi-Fi. Useful for a group or a handset with no eSIM. Useless for an unlocked iPhone and ten days in Geneva. Queue, deposit, return. Same radio (Swisscom / Sunrise / Salt) as an eSIM, more friction.

Local plastic SIM. Airport desk, passport, sometimes a Swiss number. Useful with no eSIM. Less useful once the phone takes a QR: you already paid the queue. See eSIM vs local SIM.

Public Wi-Fi. A portal, an email, a session. It works at the hotel. It does not work under a market awning, on an SBB train, or at 6 am on the road to Zermatt.

DATA / SWITZERLAND

How much data for your trip in Switzerland?

Three typical trips, same maths as the calculator, Europe factor. Maps, SBB, Reels or a laptop on tethering: the same gigabytes on an eSIM or a pocket Wi-Fi box. Hotel Wi-Fi is common: aim for the low end if you turn off photo backup on cellular. Read the fair use.

A week, phone only8 GB

Estimate 7 GB · Maps, chat, Instagram. No Reels, no laptop.

Ten days with Reels15 GB

Estimate 14 GB · Same base, plus half an hour of video a day.

Two weeks with a laptop30 GB

Estimate 26.8 GB · One hour of phone tethering a day for the computer.

Open the data calculator

How to choose

Start with the phone, not ZRH.

Open the compatibility tool. No eSIM: plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi. Stop there for the eSIM.

If the eSIM passes: open the EE, Vodafone, Three, Tesco, giffgaff or EU account page. Search for Switzerland on this plan, this week. Some Europe lists still write it: data roaming can be enough for a city break. Cheap PAYG, some Tesco, giffgaff, some Irish SKUs: it is almost never included. Take the eSIM, switch home data roaming off.

Buy a Switzerland plan, not “Europe”, unless you really chain Italy or Germany. Read the host (Swisscom, Sunrise, Salt) on the comparison. Ignore “5G World”.

Install on home Wi-Fi. Keep the home line for SMS. Size the GB (Maps, SBB, Reels, a laptop). Do not buy “unlimited” because you fear PAYG: you switch PAYG off, you do not buy it. Read the fair use.

2026 TRAPS

Mistakes that still cost money

  1. Counting on ZRH / SBB Wi-Fi

A captive portal is not Maps in the Gotthard. Install the eSIM before Heathrow. Public Wi-Fi rescues a QR, not a ski week.

    Compare Switzerland eSIMs
  2. Leaving EE / Vodafone / Three data roaming on « just in case »

If Switzerland is not written: PAYG per MB. Even listed, two open counters eat a Europe allowance. Switch off data roaming, not the line.

    Compare Switzerland eSIMs
  3. Buying a « Europe » eSIM for Geneva only

You pay for Italy / Germany you will not use, with no Swisscom guarantee. Stay on a Switzerland plan, and read the host. A regional pack only wins if you really chain the borders.

    Switzerland plans only
  4. Scanning the QR on a phone with no eSIM, at GVA

The test is before you buy. Fail: plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi, not a QR in the queue.

    Check compatibility
  5. Taking pocket Wi-Fi « because it is simpler »

Queue, deposit, return. An eSIM installed at home is the simplest move once the phone is compatible.

FAQ

FAQ

How do I get internet in Switzerland in 2026?

Compatible unlocked phone: a Switzerland eSIM installed before the flight. It is not automatically EU roaming. No eSIM: plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi. Home PAYG per MB: never, if Switzerland is not written on your factsheet.

Do I need an eSIM to travel to Switzerland?

As soon as the phone supports it, yes, it is the simplest tool, especially outside Geneva / Zurich. The eSIM is not relevant on a locked EE or Vodafone Android with no profile, an old iPhone, or a pile of tablets with no radio. Test the model before you buy a QR.

Is hotel, airport or train Wi-Fi enough?

Not as plan A. It rescues a forgotten QR or a WhatsApp call at the hotel. Maps, SBB, Twint at a restaurant: you need cellular data. Captive portals drop in a tunnel. In Zermatt, chalet Wi-Fi is not a plan.

How many GB for 10 days in Switzerland?

Often 8 to 10 GB for a week in town (Maps, messages, a bit of photo), hotel Wi-Fi being frequent. 15 to 20 GB if you add Reels and iCloud backup. Ski plus a laptop on video calls pushes toward 30 GB or a plan with tethering. The site calculator uses the same scenarios, Europe factor.

Can I keep my UK number?

Yes. A Switzerland eSIM is almost always data only. Leave the EE, Vodafone or Three SIM or eSIM for Revolut, Monzo and high-street OTPs. Switch off data roaming only if you do not want to eat a Europe allowance.

Where to buy the eSIM: before the flight or in Zurich?

Before. QR on home Wi-Fi or at Heathrow. An airport desk mostly sells local PAYG and pocket Wi-Fi, with a queue. Public Wi-Fi at ZRH is a backup, not a shop.

A travel eSIM, a pocket Wi-Fi and a home line in roaming often ride the same MNOs. What changes is the price per MB, the host you can read, and the bank SMS. Once the phone is compatible, we stay on the eSIM.
