Roaming in Switzerland vs eSIM: what to get with a UK or EU plan

EU roaming on an Irish SIM, and a UK roam add-on, say nothing, on their own, about Switzerland. Roaming in Switzerland vs eSIM is not a draw. Compatible unlocked mobile: take the eSIM as soon as you want to pick the host, ski, or connect two phones. The exception sits on a subscriber factsheet (Switzerland written in a commercial Europe zone), not on a welcome SMS at ZRH.

This guide compares home-carrier roaming and a travel eSIM for everyone: solo, couple, family, group, business, older travellers, teenagers. Swiss hosts stay Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt. Detail in the network guide. The airport box is a sibling piece: eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi. Plans sit on the Switzerland comparison.

Supplier links are affiliates. They do not move the eSIM verdict or catalog prices. Detail in the methodology.

Roaming or eSIM in Switzerland: the verdict

OptionWho it is forStrengthTraveller weakness
Travel eSIM1 to 3 compatible mobiles, 5 to 21 days, skiHost written, €/GB, installed before HeathrowData only: no Swiss number
Home data roaming (Switzerland still listed)Subscribers whose factsheet names Switzerland this weekData on the line you already haveYou do not pick the host. Europe-zone fair use
Travel pass / add-onYou must take voice calls on the home number, SKU without SwitzerlandAn add-on in the carrier appOpaque host. This is not Swisscom
PAYG per MBNobodyNoneMaps is not a “quick test”. French Orange: €13.31 per MB. UK PAYG is pounds, same idea

Rule: standard plan without Switzerland written (cheap PAYG, some Tesco, giffgaff, some Irish SKUs): eSIM, home data roaming off. EE, Vodafone, Three Europe lists, some EU premiums: data roaming can hold if you re-check the country list the week you fly. As soon as you add Verbier, a laptop, or a second phone: eSIM. PAYG per MB: never.

Three eSIMs we track, useful once the phone passes the check:

A reader whose factsheet writes Switzerland is not “behind” if they stay on that line. They have a SKU that adds the Confederation. The rest of this guide assumes the usual case: a home plan that does not write Switzerland, or a trip outside the cities.

What EU roaming does not cover

Since 2017, “roam like at home” stops at the EU border (plus extras by carrier). Switzerland is not in that legal zone. A plan that “works in France” says nothing about a Maps refresh in Geneva. The Confederation is not “almost Europe” for the regulation.

Many operators still add Switzerland (and Andorra) to a commercial zone called “Europe”. EE, Vodafone and Three Europe lists often do. Irish SIMs (Vodafone IE, Three IE, eir) and some French métropole SKUs do too. It is not cheap PAYG. It is not automatic on Tesco or giffgaff.

At landing, carriers often send a welcome SMS. That is not a plan. It is a price list in a text. Out-of-bundle data outside the listed zone is billed per MB, in small increments. On French Orange the public ladder is about €13.31 per MB. UK PAYG is the same idea in pounds: a Maps session plus two stories is a West End bill without the show.

Swisscom is not that SMS. It is a local MNO. Your EE or Vodafone line sometimes attaches to it in roaming. You do not pick the host. An eSIM, if you read the column, does.

EE, Vodafone, Three, EU SIMs: the home factsheet

You are not buying “EE’s Swiss network”. You are buying this week’s roaming agreement on your SKU. Hosts behind it are still Swisscom, Sunrise, Salt. The carrier app almost never names them. On our side the host networks column does, for the eSIM.

EE, Vodafone, Three, Tesco, giffgaff

Standard UK tariffs do not inherit EU law for Switzerland. If the Europe destinations page writes Switzerland this week, data can come out of the UK allowance (watch the Europe fair-use cap). If it does not, it is PAYG per MB.

Carriers sell travel passes / roam extras (day or trip). A few GB, sometimes minutes, short validity. Useful if you must answer the UK number from a Zurich hotel. Less useful for ten days of Maps, translate and Reels: price per GB on a Switzerland eSIM, in the catalog, almost always wins once you ski or tether.

giffgaff and many MVNOs are stricter: nothing useful outside the listed zone unless you buy a bolt-on. Treat a welcome SMS as a warning, not a bundle. Recheck this week.

Ireland and other EU SIMs

Same rule as Spain or Germany: EU roaming ≠ Switzerland in law. Vodafone IE, Three IE, eir, or a French Orange métropole SKU: open the country list. If Switzerland is still written, data roaming can hold for a city break. You still do not pick Swisscom over Salt.

If Switzerland is not written: eSIM, home data off. The PAYG ladder is not a trial.

Orange Travel is not EE

Orange Travel is not EE roaming and it is not Orange France roaming. It is a travel eSIM, a reseller. Same reflex as Airalo: read the host, not the logo.

The move: eSIM before Heathrow, home number on

Open the compatibility tool before you buy a QR. Some Androids bought on EE, Vodafone, Three or Tesco have no eSIM. It is not “every iPhone 14 and later”.

Install the profile on home Wi-Fi, or at Heathrow / Gatwick / Manchester. On arrival: data = Switzerland eSIM. Data roaming off on the home SIM. Data roaming on on the travel eSIM if the profile asks for it. Leave the home number on for Revolut, Monzo, high-street OTPs, HMRC, PayPal.

Pocket Wi-Fi and a local SIM are plan B. See eSIM vs pocket Wi-Fi and eSIM vs local SIM.

DATA / SWITZERLAND

How much data for your trip in Switzerland?

Three typical trips, same maths as the calculator, Europe factor. Maps, SBB, Reels or a laptop on tethering: the same gigabytes on an eSIM or a pocket Wi-Fi box. Hotel Wi-Fi is common: aim for the low end if you turn off photo backup on cellular. Read the fair use.

A week, phone only8 GB

Estimate 7 GB · Maps, chat, Instagram. No Reels, no laptop.

Ten days with Reels15 GB

Estimate 14 GB · Same base, plus half an hour of video a day.

Two weeks with a laptop30 GB

Estimate 26.8 GB · One hour of phone tethering a day for the computer.

Mistakes that still cost money

  1. Thinking EU roaming works automatically in Geneva

Legally, Switzerland is not in roam like at home. A welcome SMS at ZRH is not a plan. It is sometimes a Europe zone, sometimes the PAYG per MB rung.

    Compare Switzerland eSIMs
  2. Leaving EE / Vodafone / Three data on « just in case »

Without Switzerland on the factsheet: PAYG per MB. Switch off data roaming, not the line: bank SMS still need to land.

    Compare Switzerland eSIMs
  3. Mixing a Europe SKU with a basic home tariff

Switzerland may sit on a commercial Europe list. A basic EE or Three plan carries almost nothing outside the EU. Recheck the country list.

    Check compatibility
  4. Switching off the UK SIM « to avoid roaming »

You lose Revolut, Monzo, high-street OTPs. The Switzerland eSIM is data only. Switch off data, not the number.

    Check compatibility
  5. Counting on roaming for Verbier plus a laptop

You do not pick Swisscom. A Europe FUP is not a ski plan. An eSIM host is readable, a pass host rarely is.

FAQ

FAQ

Does my UK or EU roaming work in Switzerland?

Legal EU roaming says nothing about Switzerland. Many SKUs add Switzerland in a commercial « Europe » zone. Others do not (basic EE, Three or Vodafone extras). Check the factsheet the week you travel.

Switzerland roaming vs eSIM: what should I get?

Compatible phone: travel eSIM as soon as you want Swisscom, two lines, or ski. Exception: a factsheet that writes Switzerland, one phone, light use. PAYG per MB if Switzerland is not listed: never. It is not a draw with the eSIM: the eSIM host is readable.

Does EE include Switzerland in a Europe zone?

Some EE, Vodafone or Three extras list Switzerland in a Europe add-on. That is not every basic tariff. Recheck the Europe data envelope of YOUR contract. The host (Swisscom, Sunrise, Salt) stays opaque.

How much is PAYG data in Switzerland?

If Switzerland is not in your zone: UK PAYG is billed per MB outside Europe. A Maps session in the Gotthard is not a small test.

Can I keep EE for bank SMS?

Yes. A Switzerland eSIM is almost always data only. Keep the home SIM or eSIM for Monzo, Revolut, high-street OTPs. Switch off data roaming only, not the line.

Is Orange Travel the same as EE roaming?

No. Orange Travel is a travel eSIM, a reseller. Swisscom, Sunrise or Salt is the host network. Roaming of your home line is another product. Three products. Read the host.

A travel eSIM and a home line in roaming often ride the same MNOs. What changes is the price per MB, the host you can read, and the bank SMS. Once the phone is compatible, we stay on the eSIM.
