In Morocco you almost never buy “an eSIM network”. You buy access to a local operator: Maroc Telecom (IAM), inwi, Orange Maroc. The eSIM brand (Airalo, Holafly, Ubigi, Nomad) is a reseller. If the plan sits on the wrong host for your route, Maps drops in the Atlas, Instagram crawls in Merzouga, and the “5G” on the pack does nothing.
This guide ranks the three Moroccan MNOs for a visitor, not a local subscriber. Scores come from field experience studies (Opensignal, Morocco report April 2026), subscriber volumes (ANRT, Q1 2026), and the host each travel eSIM declares, the same field as the networks table on the Morocco comparison.

Simple rule: pick Maroc Telecom if the itinerary leaves Casablanca, Rabat and Marrakech. Pick inwi if you stay in metros and want the most stable day-to-day connection (video, tasks). Orange Maroc is the “time on 5G” pick in agglomerations. Mix medina and mountains: take a multi-host plan. Do not pretend a city 5G SKU is enough for Merzouga.

A reader with no eSIM radio is not “behind”. They need a different tool. The rest of this guide assumes a compatible SKU, the usual case on our catalog.
What the studies actually measure
Opensignal: experience, not 5G ads
The Morocco report for April 2026 aggregates user measurements from 1 January to 31 March 2026. This is not a lab drive test. It is what phones see in the wild. Commercial 5G started on 7 November 2025. This report is the first “5G era” snapshot, not an auction brochure.
Figures that matter for a traveller:
- Maroc Telecom: Best Network title. Seven solo wins. Download Speed Experience 27.5 Mbps, Upload 9.2 Mbps. It also wins Coverage Experience, 5G Coverage Experience and Consistent Quality. On 5G, 280.2 Mbps download (ahead of inwi at 198.5 Mbps).
- inwi: Video Experience 52.3 / 100 (ahead of IAM 49.6 and Orange 40.1). Reliability Experience 815 points (24 ahead of IAM, 71 ahead of Orange). It also wins 5G video.
- Orange Maroc: 5G Availability 51.2% of the time (inwi 44.6%, IAM 38.7%). Games Experience 65.6 (IAM 61.4, inwi 61.3).
On video, inwi wins (52.3 / 100), ahead of Maroc Telecom (49.6) and Orange (40.1):
The Casa–Rabat–Marrakech corridor is not a mobile desert. Think Tube coverage there. The delta sits at the margin: Atlas passes, tracks toward Merzouga, Rif villages, Tangier ferries, the Essaouira coast. That is a rural branch line, not Zone 1.
ANRT: who actually has the most lines
Opensignal experience is not market share. End of March 2026, the ANRT counts 57.06 million mobile subscribers (penetration 154.93%: a lot of prepaid, sometimes several SIMs). Q1 2026 summary relayed by Tic Maroc:

Do not mix market share with quality. IAM is no longer #1 on lines. It remains the geographic safety net. For an eSIM: if the host is not Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc or inwi, ask.
What carrier roaming does not tell you
Staying on EE, Vodafone, Three, Tesco Mobile, giffgaff or an Irish / EU home tariff in Morocco is often dearer for a weaker radio. EU roaming does not cover Morocco. A UK post-Brexit roam pass is a different product again. Detail in the roaming guide.
Orange Maroc is not Orange France, and it is not EE. A welcome SMS at CMN almost never names the host. On our side the host networks column does, for the eSIM.
Detailed ranking of the three networks
1. Maroc Telecom (IAM), the safety net
Maroc Telecom does not crush inwi on video in town. It wins where a traveller suffers the network: Tizi n’Tichka, tracks toward Zagora, the coast between Essaouira and Agadir, Middle Atlas villages, night transfers.
If your eSIM lists Maroc Telecom, IAM or Itissalat Al-Maghrib, you have the “I do not want to debug Maps at 10 pm” profile. That is eSIM Giga’s default once the itinerary is not 100% urban.
On 5G, IAM took the widest 3.5 GHz block (120 MHz versus 70 MHz for the other two, per 2025 auction summaries). In the mountains you drop back to 4G LTE. That is normal, even on a plan stamped 5G.

2. inwi, the best typical day in town
inwi (Wana group) wins the daily grind: YouTube in a petit taxi, Google Translate in the souk, WhatsApp, Reels. Reliability and video are the metrics that avoid “I have four bars and nothing loads”.
Good match for Marrakech, Fès, Rabat, central Casablanca. Less reassuring once you leave the tarmac. A multi-host SKU on inwi + IAM stays the cleanest format for a road trip.

3. Orange Maroc, time on 5G, not the net
Orange Maroc is the network if you measure the trip in minutes of 5G: laptop hotspot in a Casa coworking space, video calls, backups. 5G Availability at 51.2% means, of the three, this is where Opensignal most often sees an active 5G carrier. It is not theoretical 5G coverage on a marketing map.
Outside the big agglomerations that bonus melts. Take Orange Maroc as a sole host only if you stay on urban corridors.
UK trap: the orange logo. An EE roam pass, a French Orange Travel eSIM, and Orange Maroc prepaid are three products. The host behind a Travel eSIM can be Orange Maroc. That is still not roaming on your UK number.

From the local operator to the eSIM: what you actually buy
So far we talked Maroc Telecom, inwi, Orange Maroc. Those are Moroccan subscriber networks. A travel eSIM is not an IAM contract. It is an MVNO / aggregator that rents capacity on one (or several) of those hosts.

Where to read the host on our site
Product pages often say “Morocco 5G”. The useful field is the host operator. On eSIM Giga we normalise it (Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc, inwi) from supplier labels. That is the “Host networks” column of the Morocco networks table: a provider, the average price per GB, and the hosts declared on the plans we analysed.
Three patterns show up in that table:
- A single host (often Maroc Telecom or Orange Maroc). The most readable: you know which network you will be on.
- Multi-host (IAM + inwi, sometimes all three). The phone latches onto the best signal. Most reassuring format outside town.
- “Partners in Morocco” with no name. Unknown spread: possible, but you are no longer buying a network, you are buying a hope.
Airport pocket Wi-Fi (CMN / RAK) also rides these three MNOs. They lose on two points: a queue and another device. An eSIM installed before Heathrow or Gatwick stays the cleanest move. Some EE, Vodafone, Three or Tesco Mobile Androids have no eSIM: use the compatibility tool, not “every iPhone 14 and later”.

How to choose in 60 seconds
- Draw the map. Only Casa + Rabat + Marrakech: inwi or Orange Maroc often holds. As soon as you add Essaouira, Chefchaouen, the Atlas, Merzouga: Maroc Telecom (ideally multi-host).
- Open the live comparison: Morocco eSIM, sort €/GB for limited plans, total price for short stays.
- Read the host in the networks table, not the word 5G. An Orange Maroc 5G in Merzouga at night is not an IAM 4G that actually connects.
- Install before the flight. CMN / RAK Wi-Fi exists. Scanning a QR in a jet-lag queue is worse.
- Keep the home line for bank SMS (data-only eSIM).
- Turn off iCloud / Google Photos backups on cellular unless you bought a large pack or unlimited with fair use you actually read. Size the GB with the data simulator.

How much data do I need for Morocco?
Maps, chat and social for a week in town: a 10 GB plan often holds. Reels and photo backup over 10 days: closer to 20 GB. Laptop hotspot for two weeks: 30 to 50 GB. The calculator applies the Africa / Maghreb factor.
Travel eSIM or a Moroccan carrier SIM?

Does 5G work in Morocco in 2026?
Commercial launch was November 2025. Opensignal (April 2026) already measures 5G, mostly in cities. Outside Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakesh, you fall back to 4G. That is normal, including on a plan stamped 5G.
Is Orange Maroc the same as EE or Orange UK?
No. Orange Maroc is one of the three MNOs in the Kingdom. Your EE, Vodafone or Three plan at home is roaming or a pass. An « Orange Travel » eSIM is still a reseller. Read the host column.
