At CMN you need Maps, a petit taxi, sometimes a translator, before you have riad Wi-Fi. Internet in Morocco in 2026 is not a “magic 5G” problem. It is a tools problem. Compatible unlocked mobile: take an eSIM, installed before Heathrow or Gatwick. EE, Vodafone, Three and public Wi-Fi come later, not as plan A.

Rule: eSIM-ready phone: Morocco eSIM, data roaming off on the home line. No eSIM: plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi. A rare SKU that writes Morocco (Free Max is the French example): data roaming can hold if you re-check the country list the week you fly. CMN café or riad Wi-Fi is not a plan. Commercial 5G has existed since November 2025. It does not replace a plan. EU roaming does not cover Morocco.

A reader with no eSIM radio is not “behind”. They need a different tool. The rest of this guide assumes a compatible SKU, the usual case on our catalog.
What the eSIM changes in 2026
An eSIM is not a network. It is access to a host. The brand (Airalo, Holafly, Ubigi, Nomad, Orange Travel) is a reseller. You buy Maroc Telecom, inwi or Orange Maroc, not a “5G World” cloud.
Friction. Buy from the sofa. Install on home Wi-Fi. Enable on landing. No deposit, no desk hours, no return on departure day.
Dual SIM. iPhone and most recent Galaxies: home line for the number (UK high-street banks, Revolut, Monzo, PayPal, HMRC). Morocco eSIM = data line. That is the clean 2026 move. You no longer choose between Maps and the card OTP.
A readable host. On our side the host networks column names the MNO. An EE welcome SMS at CMN almost never does.
5G opened commercially on 7 November 2025. Useful in town if the host and the phone take it. In the Atlas you drop back to 4G. That is normal. Tube in Casa, rural lane in the mountains.
The move: install before Heathrow, keep the home number
Open the compatibility tool before you buy a QR. Galaxy / iPhone bought on EE, Vodafone, Three, Tesco Mobile or giffgaff: some SKUs have no eSIM. It is not “every iPhone 14 and later”.
Install the profile on home Wi-Fi, or at Heathrow / Gatwick / a layover. Scanning a QR jet-lagged at CMN is the Tube on a Sunday night: it works, it is not plan A.
On arrival: cellular data = Morocco eSIM. Data roaming off on the home SIM. Data roaming on on the travel eSIM if the profile asks for it (that is the host setting, not “EE roaming”). Leave the home number on for SMS.
CMN / RAK pocket Wi-Fi is still a device, a queue, often a deposit. We pull it only if the eSIM does not hold. See eSIM vs pocket Wi-Fi.

Three cases, not more.
- No eSIM in the phone. Carrier Galaxy, old iPhone. The QR will fail. Plastic SIM at the desk, or pocket Wi-Fi.
- Many devices, one radio. Four tablets, two phones with shaky hotspot: a box avoids flattening the parent’s battery.
- You refuse tethering. Some eSIM plans cut hotspot (fair use). A box stays an access point, even if the host behind it is the same MNO.
Public Wi-Fi (CMN, RAK, cafés, riads) is not on that list. It is a backup. It does not replace Maps in the lanes of Fès.
Roaming, pocket Wi-Fi, public Wi-Fi: the rest
Home roaming. EU “roam like at home” stops at the EU border. Morocco is not in that zone. EE, Vodafone, Three, Tesco, giffgaff and most Irish / EU tariffs bill PAYG per MB outside Europe. On French Orange the public ladder is about €13.31 per MB. UK PAYG is the same idea in pounds. The 2026 exception sits on a factsheet: a SKU that lists Morocco in its data destinations. Free Max is the French example. It is not EE. It is not Three Go Roam. UK carriers also sell travel passes. Useful to answer the home number. Less useful to pick IAM vs inwi. Pocket Wi-Fi. Useful for a group or a handset with no eSIM. Useless for an unlocked iPhone and ten days in Marrakech. Queue, deposit, return. Same radio (IAM / inwi / Orange Maroc) as an eSIM, more friction.
Local plastic SIM. Airport desk, passport, sometimes a Moroccan number. Useful with no eSIM. Less useful once the phone takes a QR: you already paid the queue. See eSIM vs local SIM.
Public Wi-Fi. A portal, an email, a session. It works at the riad. It does not work under a medina vault, in a grand taxi, or at 6 am on the road to Merzouga.
How much data for your trip in Morocco?
Three typical trips, same maths as the calculator, Maghreb factor. Maps, chat, Reels or a laptop on tethering: the same gigabytes on an eSIM or a pocket Wi-Fi box. Turn off photo backup on cellular if you want the low end. Read the fair use.

How to choose
Start with the phone, not CMN.
Open the compatibility tool. No eSIM: plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi. Stop there for the eSIM.
If the eSIM passes: open the EE, Vodafone, Three, Tesco, giffgaff or EU account page. Search for Morocco on this plan, this week. If it is written, data roaming can be enough. EE, Vodafone, Three PAYG, Tesco, giffgaff, a standard Irish SIM: it is almost never included without a pass. Take the eSIM, switch home data roaming off. A roam pass: only if you must take voice on the home number.
Buy a Morocco plan, not “Africa”. Read the host (Maroc Telecom, inwi, Orange Maroc) on the comparison. Ignore “5G World”. Orange Maroc is not Orange France, and it is not EE.
Install on home Wi-Fi. Keep the home line for SMS. Size the GB with the data simulator (Maps, Reels, a laptop). Do not buy “unlimited” because you fear PAYG: you switch PAYG off, you do not buy it. Read the fair use.

How do I get internet in Morocco in 2026?
Compatible unlocked phone: a Morocco eSIM installed before the flight. It is not EU roaming, and not CMN Wi-Fi. No eSIM: plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi. Home PAYG per MB: never.
Do I need an eSIM to travel to Morocco?
As soon as the phone supports it, yes, it is the simplest tool. The eSIM is not relevant on a locked EE or Vodafone Android with no profile, an old iPhone, or a pile of tablets with no radio. Test the model before you buy a QR.
Is riad, airport or café Wi-Fi enough?
Not as plan A. It rescues a forgotten QR or a WhatsApp call at the hotel. Maps in the medina, petit taxi, translation in the souk: you need cellular data. Captive portals drop as soon as you move.
How many GB for 10 days in Morocco?
About 10 GB for a week in town (Maps, messages, a bit of photo). 20 GB if you add Reels and iCloud backup. A laptop on video calls pushes toward 30 GB or a plan with tethering. The site calculator uses the same scenarios, Morocco factor.
Can I keep my UK number?
Yes. A Morocco eSIM is almost always data only. Leave the EE, Vodafone or Three SIM or eSIM for Revolut, Monzo and high-street OTPs. Switch off data roaming only.
Where to buy the eSIM: before the flight or in Casablanca?
Before. QR on home Wi-Fi or at Heathrow. An airport desk mostly sells local PAYG and pocket Wi-Fi, with a queue. Public Wi-Fi at CMN is a backup, not a shop.
