At CMN or Marrakech-Ménara, one queue waits for a plastic SIM from Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc or inwi. The other already has data: a travel eSIM installed before the flight. eSIM vs local SIM is not a draw. Compatible unlocked mobile: take the eSIM. Local prepaid only becomes relevant when the eSIM does not hold, or when you truly need a Moroccan number.
This guide compares travel eSIM and a local SIM / carrier eSIM for everyone: solo, couple, family, group, business, older travellers, teenagers, phones with no eSIM. The hosts stay the same. Detail in the network guide. Plans sit on the Morocco comparison.
Supplier links are affiliates. They do not move the eSIM verdict or the catalog prices. Detail in the methodology.
eSIM or local SIM in Morocco: the verdict
| Factor | Travel eSIM | Local SIM / eSIM (IAM, Orange Maroc, inwi) |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase | Before the flight, two minutes | Desk, passport, ANRT ID |
| CMN / RAK queue | No | Yes, desk hours |
| Moroccan number | Rare (usually data only) | Yes, useful for taxis and restaurants |
| Host | The one written on the plan | The MNO on the logo above the desk |
| Home bank SMS | Keep the UK or Irish line | Risk if you pull the home SIM |
| Best for | 5 to 21 days, no commitment | Long stay, need for a local number |
Rule: eSIM-ready phone, 1 to 3 lines, 5 to 21 days: eSIM. Stay of several months, a Moroccan number is mandatory, Galaxy with no eSIM: plastic SIM. Staying on EE, Vodafone, Three or an EU home tariff in Morocco is the worst of the three, unless this week’s factsheet writes Morocco (a French Free Max SKU is the textbook example) or you bought a voice roam pass. Detail in the roaming guide. EU roaming does not cover Morocco.

Who it is for: solo, family, expats, business
| Profile | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, compatible iPhone / Pixel / Galaxy | eSIM | Maps in the medina, no queue |
| Couple, two unlocked mobiles | 2 eSIMs (or 1 + tethering) | Two bars. One prepaid does not save the second phone |
| Family, kids / tablets | Adult eSIMs + hotspot | Bank, Revolut, Monzo, PayPal and HMRC OTPs stay on the home line |
| Group of 5+ | eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi | Five local SIMs is five queues |
| Business, laptop | eSIM + tethering | The CMN queue costs more than an hour of data |
| Older traveller, uneasy with a QR | eSIM installed at home | The desk is not simpler once the passport is out |
| Teens on a cheap SIM | eSIM, home data off before boarding | A light UK PAYG or Irish SIM carries almost nothing outside Europe |
| Stay of 3+ months, a rental, local admin | Local SIM | A Moroccan number for agencies, deliveries, local OTPs |
| Mobile with no eSIM | Plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi | The eSIM is not relevant. Check the model first |
A reader who needs a local number is not “behind”. They need a different tool. The rest of this guide assumes a short stay, the usual case on our catalog.
What the local SIM actually wins
IAM / inwi / Orange Maroc prepaid is not a 2010 gadget. It wins three cases, not more.
- A Moroccan number. Restaurants, petits taxis, agencies, sometimes an OTP from a local app. Travel eSIMs are almost always data only.
- A long stay. Three months in Casablanca: dirham per GB on a local postpaid can win. Five days in Marrakech, no, once you count the queue.
- No eSIM. Galaxy on an EE, Vodafone, Three or Tesco contract, old iPhone. The QR will fail. The eSIM compatibility tool says so before you pay, not at RAK.
The rest (“my cousin in Casa does this”) is not an argument. Your cousin is a subscriber. You are a visitor.
What the eSIM wins (almost always)
Friction. Buy from the sofa. Install on home Wi-Fi. Enable on landing. No queue, no desk hours, no ANRT ID at the counter.
Dual SIM. iPhone and most recent Galaxies: home line for the number (UK high-street banks, Revolut, Monzo, PayPal, HMRC). Morocco eSIM = data line. You no longer choose between Maps and the card OTP.
A readable host. On our side the host networks column names Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc or inwi. A desk often sells “20 GB” without saying whether you will be on IAM or inwi once you leave the airport. Same radio possible, less information before you pay.
Orange is not Orange. An Orange Maroc SIM at the desk, an EE roam extra, an Orange Travel eSIM: three products. Do not merge them because the logo is orange. Orange Maroc is not Orange France, and it is not EE.
The network ranking applies to both tools. An inwi SIM in Merzouga is no more magic than an inwi eSIM. Pick the host, not the plastic.

Check my phoneHow much data for your trip in Morocco?
Three typical trips, same maths as the calculator, Maghreb factor. Maps, chat, Reels or a laptop on tethering: the same gigabytes on an eSIM or a pocket Wi-Fi box. Turn off photo backup on cellular if you want the low end. Read the fair use.
Estimate 8.6 GB · Maps, chat, Instagram. No Reels, no laptop.
Estimate 17.1 GB · Same base, plus half an hour of video a day.
Estimate 32.7 GB · One hour of phone tethering a day for the computer.
Mistakes that still cost money
- Pulling the UK SIM for « a proper local »
You lose Revolut, Monzo, high-street OTPs. Dual SIM: Morocco eSIM + home line. No eSIM: pocket Wi-Fi or a local SIM in the second tray, not in place of the home number.
Check compatibility - Mixing up Orange Maroc and EE or Orange Travel
The orange logo at the RAK desk is not your Vodafone or Three plan. It is a local MNO. Home roaming, a roam pass and Orange Travel are three other products.
Compare Morocco eSIMs - Queuing at CMN for 8 days in Marrakesh
Passport, ANRT ID, sometimes 4G stock. An eSIM installed at home skips that. The local SIM wins on a long stay, not on a long weekend.
Compare Morocco eSIMs - Scanning the QR on a phone with no eSIM, at the airport
The test is before you buy. Fail: plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi, not a QR in the queue.
Check compatibility - Buying local « unlimited » without reading fair use
Moroccan PAYG throttles too. Calculate the GB. Unlimited without tethering does not save a laptop.

FAQ
eSIM or local SIM in Morocco?
Compatible unlocked phone: travel eSIM, installed before you fly. A plastic local SIM wins for a stay of several months or if you need a Moroccan number. Ten days in Marrakesh, the eSIM wins on the queue.
Do I need a passport for a Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc or inwi SIM?
Yes, ANRT ID is the rule at the counter. Passport, sometimes a photo. A travel eSIM is bought with no CMN queue. It is not the same product: data only on one side, often a local number on the other.
Is a local SIM cheaper than an eSIM?
Local PAYG can win in dirhams if you stay a long time. For 5 to 21 days, add the taxi, the queue and the time. The €/GB on the Morocco catalog often comes out ahead, with no desk.
Can I keep my UK number with a local SIM?
Only if the phone is dual SIM. Pulling the EE, Vodafone or Three SIM for « a proper local » drops Monzo, Revolut and high-street OTPs. A travel eSIM leaves the home line on. That is the clean move.
Is Orange Maroc the same as EE or Orange Travel?
No. Orange Maroc is a Moroccan MNO. Your EE, Vodafone or Three plan is roaming or a roam pass. An Orange Travel eSIM is a reseller. Three products. Read the host, not the orange logo.
Where can I buy a local SIM in Casablanca or Marrakesh?
Airport desks (CMN, RAK, TNG) and city shops. Opening hours, passport, sometimes 4G stock only. The eSIM installs on home Wi-Fi. The desk still helps if the phone has no eSIM.

A travel eSIM and a local SIM often ride the same MNOs. What changes is the queue, the number, and the bank SMS. Once the phone is compatible and the stay is short, we stay on the eSIM.
