EU roaming on an Irish SIM, and a UK roam add-on, say nothing about Japan. Roaming in Japan vs eSIM is not a draw. Compatible unlocked mobile: take the eSIM, and turn data roaming off on the home line. The exception sits on this week’s factsheet, not on a welcome SMS at Narita.

Rule: EE, Vodafone, Three, Tesco Mobile, giffgaff, or a standard EU tariff (Ireland, France, Spain, Germany): eSIM, home data roaming off. A rare premium “world” SKU that writes Japan: data roaming can hold if you re-check the country list the week you fly. PAYG per MB: never. Opensignal’s inbound note, June 2026 points the same way: staying on the home line in Japan is often dearer for a weaker radio.

A reader on a world tariff that names Japan is not “behind” if they stay on that line. They have a SKU that writes the country. The rest of the guide assumes the usual case: a home plan that does not include the archipelago.
What EU roaming does not cover
Since 2017, “roam like at home” stops at the EU border (plus some extras by carrier: UK on some Irish SIMs, Switzerland, sometimes Ukraine). Japan is not in that zone. A plan that “works in Italy” says nothing about a Maps refresh in Shinjuku. A UK post-Brexit roam pass is a different product again. EE, Vodafone and Three inclusive-roam lists are Europe-heavy. Japan is almost always extra.
At landing, carriers often send a welcome SMS. That is not a plan. It is a price list in a text. Out-of-bundle data outside Europe is billed per MB, in small increments. On French Orange the public ladder is about €13.31 per MB. UK PAYG is the same idea in pounds: a Maps session plus two stories is a Ginza bill without the sushi.
Another 2026 trap on the Japanese side: emergency « JAPAN Roaming » between MNOs (from 1 April 2026) does not apply to a UK, Irish or EU home line, or to a tourist eSIM. It is a disaster net for local subscribers. Not a Shibuya bonus.
EE, Vodafone, Three, EU SIMs: the home factsheet
You are not buying “EE’s Japanese network”. You are buying this week’s roaming agreement on your SKU. Hosts behind it are still Docomo, au (KDDI), SoftBank, sometimes Rakuten. The carrier app almost never names them. On our side the host networks column does, for the eSIM.
EE, Vodafone, Three, Tesco, giffgaff
Standard UK tariffs do not pour Japan data out of the UK allowance. Without an add-on, it is PAYG per MB.
Carriers sell travel passes / roam extras (day or trip). A few GB, sometimes minutes, short validity. Useful if you must answer the UK number from a Kyoto hotel. Less useful for ten days of Maps, IC, translate and Reels: price per GB on a Japan eSIM, in the catalog, almost always wins.
giffgaff and many MVNOs are stricter: nothing useful outside Europe unless you buy a bolt-on. Treat a welcome SMS as a warning, not a bundle.
Ireland and other EU SIMs
Same rule as France or Spain: EU roaming ≠ Japan. Vodafone IE, Three IE, eir, or a French Free 5G+ / Orange métropole SKU: eSIM, home data off. The French Free Max SKU (Iliad, 31 March 2026) is the textbook exception if Japan is still on the country list. It is not EE. It is not Three Go Roam.
Voice is not the data pass
Even when a world tariff includes Japan data, outbound and inbound voice is often still billed per minute. WhatsApp / FaceTime on data skip that line. A Japan eSIM does not take your bank SMS: keep the home line on for Monzo, Revolut, high-street OTPs, Max or not.
Travel eSIM vs the home line: the clean setup
An eSIM is not a network. It is access to a host. The brand (Airalo, Holafly, PlanJapon, Ubigi) is a reseller.
Dual SIM. iPhone and most recent Galaxies: home line for the number (bank SMS, HMRC, PayPal). Japan eSIM = data line. Data roaming off on the home SIM. Data roaming on on the travel eSIM at arrival (many profiles ask for it: that is the host setting, not “EE roaming”).
Handsets bought on EE, Vodafone, Three. Some Android SKUs have no eSIM. It is not “every iPhone 14 and later”. Use the compatibility tool before you buy a QR.
Heathrow, Gatwick, a Doha or Incheon layover. Install the profile before the long-haul. Scanning a QR jet-lagged at Narita is the Tube on a Sunday night: it works, it is not plan A.

How to choose
Start with your home SKU, not Narita.
Open the EE, Vodafone, Three or EU account page. Search for Japan on this plan, this week. If it is written, data roaming can be enough. If it is not (the usual case): stop using home data roaming.
Open the compatibility tool. No eSIM: travel pass, plastic SIM or pocket Wi-Fi. The rest of this list does not apply.
If the eSIM passes: buy a Japan plan, not “Asia”. Read the host (Docomo, au (KDDI), SoftBank) on the comparison. Ignore “5G World”.
Install on home Wi-Fi, or at Heathrow. Keep the home line for SMS. Size the GB (Maps, Reels, a laptop). Do not buy “unlimited” because you fear PAYG: you switch PAYG off, you do not buy it.

Does my UK or EU roaming work in Japan?

Japan roaming vs eSIM: what should I get?
Compatible phone: travel eSIM, home data roaming off. Exception: a world tariff if Japan is still on the list. A carrier travel pass is mainly for voice on the home number.

A home line in roaming and a travel eSIM often ride the same MNOs. What changes is the price per MB, the host you can read, and the bank SMS. Once the phone is compatible and the SKU does not list Japan, we stay on the eSIM.
